Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) is Amazon’s self-publishing platform. It lets you create books and sell them on Amazon without keeping inventory at home or shipping orders yourself.
For print books, when someone places an order, Amazon prints and ships the book—and you earn royalties from the sale.
And no, “publishing a book” doesn’t have to mean writing a 300-page novel.
You can create journals, planners, coloring books, activity books, workbooks, guided journals, ebooks, and more.
That’s one reason I started with KDP: I could take an idea, turn it into a real product, and learn the process as I went.
You don’t have to know everything before you publish your first book. You just need to take it one step at a time.
Create Your Book
Start with an idea and turn it into a book. This could be a journal, planner, coloring book, activity book, workbook, ebook—or something completely different.
Upload to Amazon KDP
Upload your interior and cover, add your book details, choose your pricing, and submit it to Amazon for review.
Amazon Handles the Order
When someone purchases a print book, Amazon prints it and ships it to the customer. You earn royalties based on the sale.
No inventory. No boxes of books in your house. No trips to the post office.
JOURNALS & PLANNERS
Gratitude journals, guided journals, daily planners, trackers, logbooks, and other structured books.
COLORING BOOKS
Children’s coloring books, adult coloring books, themed collections, and original illustrated designs.
ACTIVITY BOOKS
Puzzles, mazes, educational activities, kids’ activity books, and themed activity collections.
BOOKS & WORKBOOKS
Workbooks, guides, nonfiction books, ebooks, and other original content.
You don’t have to start with the most complicated idea. Your first book can simply be the one that teaches you how the process works.
A Book Idea
You don't need a fully developed manuscript to begin. Start with an idea for a journal, planner, coloring book, activity book, or another type of book you'd like to create.
A Way to Create Your Book
You'll need a tool to design your book's interior and cover. Canva is one option, but there are other free and paid tools available.
An Amazon KDP Account
Create a free account through Amazon KDP. You'll need to provide the required account, tax, and payment information before publishing and receiving royalties.
Time to Learn
You don't need to be an expert. You do need time to understand formatting, publishing requirements, and how to prepare a book that meets Amazon's guidelines.
You don't need expensive software, a warehouse full of books, or years of experience. You need an idea, the right tools, and a willingness to learn.
Choose Your First Book
Pick one idea and decide who you're creating it for. Think about what your book will help someone do, learn, or enjoy.
Create Your Book
Design your interior and cover using the correct dimensions and formatting requirements. Make sure your content is original or that you have the necessary rights to use it.
Prepare to Publish
Create your KDP account, review Amazon's publishing guidelines, upload your files, preview your book, set your price, and submit it for review.
Your first book doesn't have to be perfect. It should be something you're proud to publish, and every step teaches you something for the next one.
